When I try to set the Background property (for example to "Red") nothing seems to happen. This is a problem because the default background color is.. euh.. ugly.

Hello Tom,

Unfortunately the Background property of RadComboBox is not bound to the control template and cannot be used to change the control background. We have some concerns about it, because it is not obvious which exactly color should be changed - the popup background, the textbox background in editable mode, the highlighted element background, etc. There are too many backgrounds to be set and one property is not enough, hence it is not bound.

To change the colors you will have to modify the control theme. Please, find attached a simple project that demonstrates how to change the theme of RadComboBox and that can be opened in Blend. I included the default and the Office themes of RadComboBox.

I apologize for the inconvenience, the Blend support and the customizability of the themes are not on the required level of quality, but we understand that they are very important and most probably very soon we will be releasing a new service pack with improved Blend support and additional properties that will allow the developers to change various control colors.

All the best,

Thanks! It solved the problem but it's clearly not optimal. If you need some property suggestions you could check out the Adobe Flex style explorer: http://examples.adobe.com/flex3/consulting/styleexplorer/Flex3StyleExplorer.html# I hope one day you guys start building components for Flex as well :)

Hi Tom Van den Eynde,

First of all, we are glad to hear that we helped in solving the problem.

Also, thanks for your suggestions. We greatly appreciate them. We will continuously improve the property model of our controls so that they can fit even in the most complicated LOB scenarios.

Sincerely yours,
Nick

So which value in the theme xaml does one actually need to change to change the base background of the combo box?

Hello Ben,

If you want to edit the brushes of  RadComboBox you have to open the project in  Blend. Thus, you can fully control the brushes of the control. Attached, you can find a document discussing on how to edit the brushes in Blend. In the attached zip file you can also find a sample project demonstrating the described approach. This document will soon be included in our help articles.

Best wishes,
Dimitrina
