Problem description

People running unpatched versions of Microsoft Windows XP SP2 may experience problems when accessing sites that issue Ajax requests.  The browser crashes with an Access Violation error in jscript.dll that looks like this:

The cause of the problem is a critical bug in jscript.dll version 5.6.0.8820.  The bug is a critical security risk anyway and Microsoft have issued a critical security update (MS06-023) that fixes the problem.  Most users should already have this installed, but users that have blocked this update can download it from this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-023.mspx
and apply the patch.  The update will replace jscript.dll with a newer version: 5.6.0.8831, dated 17-May-2006.

Later versions of jscript.dll and Internet Explorer 7 are not affected.

    Really helpful

But to add a potential quirk to this, had a user with the old version of the jscript.dll on both his live and development machines. His dev box ran IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 and worked fine, even with the Jscript.dll version 5.6.0.8820, his live box ran 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 and would crash on any AJAX enabled page.

Has this issue been resolved in the Q1 2007 SP2 release?

  • Telerik Admin , Jul 31, 2007

The issue is not related to RadAjax but rather to the critical bug in jscript.dll outlined in this article. Make sure you use the patched version of the assembly to avoid further conflicts.
