Just today I tried opening up a report to make edits, and I get the titular error in Visual Studio: "Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component"

I've attached a screenshot.

After I got this error, I upgraded to the latest release. Note that I can still view reports in my MVC application, but I can't edit them with Visual Studio.

What has gone wrong, and how do I correct it?

Thanks,

Matt

Whoops, forgot to mention that even after the upgrade I get the same error.

I also get the error in both Visual Studio 2012 (Professional) and Visual Studio 2013 (Ultimate).

Matt,
Why don't you try to do the following. Before opening one of the old files in your project. Try creating a new report file. If that opens correctly then with the new file open try to open one of the existing report files.

Hello Matthew,

This is a quote from your support ticket on the same question:

"Please verify the targeted framework version is supported. Note that as of Q2 2013 Telerik Reporting is built against .NET4. Also only Full profile is supported. For more details take a look at our System Requirements page.
Try also deleting the resx file. When the report is opened in the VS Report Designer and you make a small change, the resx file will be recreated. If by any chance you have not upgraded the solution, please run the Upgrade Wizard or follow the steps listed in the Upgrading to a Newer Version of Telerik Reporting help article.

Per support, the issue seems to be either that I was using .NET 4.5 or that I was using Visual Studio 2013, or possibly both. I switched back to .NET 4.0 and VS 2012, and haven't had the same problem since.

Hello Matthew,

This is an update I sent you in your support ticket:
"Visual Studio 2013 and .NET4+ Full Profile are supported as of Telerik Reporting Q3 2013. In case you are using Entity Framework 6 in your projects, please test installing Telerik Reporting Q3 2013 SP1 version 7.2.14.127 and upgrade your project."

Please, let us continue the discussion there until we resolve the issue.

Stef
