Hello Alex,
I am not sure what your question refers to. Could you elaborate a bit on your understanding of status vs. state?
My confusion is caused from the fact that we assume "status" and "state" the same thing. In TeamPulse the property is named "Status" whereas in TFS it is usually called "State". When syncing with a TFS project those two fields are synced and they should follow the same workflow.
If you want to customize the Task Board status lanes you can use the advanced project settings (check attached screenshots). To modify them you need to be a project administrator or user with granted edit project settings permission. Please note that string values should be written with the exact case as it is written in the EntityDefinition of the work item.
You can find more information about Story Board and Task Board in the online documentation on the following links:

Hi Elena,
I'm using TFS work item manager 2010 (btw) - version 1.0.0.0
When I pull up the task board... The columns are currently based on the states of my stories and tasks (active, resolved and closed). This works perfectly. However, I've added a custom column to my TFS project that I called "status" which I would prefer to see on my board. The statuses are: new, ready for estimation, ready for dev, in dev, dev complete, in qa, ready for uat, ready for deployment.
Would like to see my work items in these vertical lanes as opposed to the "states". Thanks for any help that can be offered.

Hi Elena,
I just found the "group by" feature which creates horizontal swimlanes for my statuses. This now meets my needs.
