Hi There

Since upgrading to the latest version of WebUI Test Studio Dev Ed (2010.1) , we are experiencing a lot of verification stability issues. The system often hangs when doing a verification on an "html block" (eg html table, div etc) or it simply responds with "recorder client is unable to communicate with the recording host" when clicking the OK button once verification has been built. On simple verification checks of small amounts of text it seems fine. Is there a limit on the amount of text it can compare? We are verifying tables of figures. This could be a show stopper for us. It used to be fine on previous versions.

Any workarounds?

We have tried it on two different machines. Both run VS 2008 SP1, on XP sp3.

Any ideas?
thanks
Dave

Hello Dave,

No matter the complexity of the HTML we should be able to perform just fine. I'm afraid we are not afraid of such problems with the latest version though.

Can you please share the exact version you are running? I'm unable to find anything in your account downloads history. Is this the latest official 2010 Q1 (Service Pack) release two weeks ago or a previous version?

All the best,

Hi

The version is recent 2010.1.5.18. Using IE8.

All seems to work fine except the verification steps with larger html blocks. Hangs most times.

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave,

There is a recent fix (from the end of the last week) which addresses a problem with some HTML that we were having problems to parse before. I cannot be sure if that fix could help in your case but if it doesn't help we will need access to the site in question to be able to investigate the problem.

Would you try a latest build? We have uploaded a custom build for another client today so you can give it a go as well. The build is here:

Telerik.WebUI.TestStudio.QA.2010.1.602

Note, this is a complete replacement of the official release or any internal build uploaded recently.

We can also test this out instead. Is that site under test available for access outside your network? If so please send test credentials (if any) via a private ticket and we will try running the latest build against that. If the fix I meant does not help we will also investigate the problem and get back to you with a fix as soon as possible.

All the best,

Hi

Thanks for rapid reply. I'll uninstall older version and try the new one you suggest. Can you confirm your link is for the Dev Ed? It says QA in the link.

The web app is an intranet application so runs inside the Unilever firewall.

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

I'm sorry, that was my fault. For some reason I got the impression you're running the QA Edition. Unfortunately we don't have the Dev Edition uploaded and I will follow up once done.

In the meantime you can test that with the QA Edition as well. They share most of the features along with the recorder. You can even share the same tests, e.g. load the Dev Edition recorded tests in a QA Edition project and check whether the problem is solved.

Kind regards,

Hi Dave,

We have just uploaded an internal build for all customers and trial users. The build is labeled 2010.1.603 and can be downloaded from the latest internal builds account page.

Hi There

I can confirm the new build above does not fix the issue on our testing laptop. I've uploaded a flat html page that has similar report output to one of ours (simplified). This page fails when doing a recording / verification of the full table of data:

To reproduce:

  • record and navigate to above
  • click on top left cell of data table and choose locate in DOM
  • click on the immediate parent table element in DOM explorer to highlight the entire table of data
  • then right click show element menu
  • then choose build verification whilst highlighted
  • choose Content, InnerMarkup, Exact, then choose default data to compare (already populated).
  • choose OK and you get error "recorder client is unable to communicate with the recording host"

if you choose to simply compare a single td cell for example it works fine.

Please let me know if this work on your builds and if it does, why it does not on our laptops.

Thanks in advance
Dave

Hello Dave,

Thank you for sharing that page and for the detailed instructions. I was able to replicate the problem locally as well.

This looks like a bug and I've logged it for our developers to investigate. I will keep an eye on that and will update this thread as soon as the resolution is available.

In the meantime please let us know if we could be of any other assistance. I'm sorry for the caused inconvenience and thanks for your time!

Sincerely yours,

Hi Dave,

This is to let you the developers put in a fix that resolves the error appearing on recording the specified scenario with your test page. The fix will be included in the upcoming Q2 release scheduled for the next week.

Thank you for your patience and understanding on the matter!

Best wishes,

Hi There

Just letting you know that I have downloaded the latest version of WebUI Test studio (July) and although it fixes the "verify against html table" in the simply example I uploaded for you (see earlier post) it does not work with our larger tables of figures. Get exactly the same error "recorder client is unable to communicate with the recording host".

Also this build causes a lot of instability with our VS 2008 when trying to set up tests. Earlier versions of this tool was very stable but the latest couple of builds (ones with new UI) have been disappointing with regular restarts of VS. Disappointing. I've tried it on two different corporate laptops.

I hope you can sort these issues out. The HTML table compare is a showstopper for us as I said before. We may have to stop using this tool and look elsewhere.

Other comments:
1) The fancy bubble to show elements menu is slow and unnecessary. The older right click menu was far quicker to use for developers (this is the dev edition after).
2) The Verification window needs looking at. When you edit sentences, the edit content icon on right is always hidden and you have to drag DOM section to right to see it. Clicking the icon expands the edit window, but when you edit the "expanded" content and click OK it does not save it! You have reclick the edit icon first.

Hope this feedback is useful.
Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave Clarke,

I am very sorry to hear you continue to have problems with the Verification Builder. Could you send us another sample page, this time of your complex page? Open your complex page that is giving you problems in IE (not in our recorder), select Save As from the menu in IE, then select "Webpage,  complete". This will create both a file and a folder we can use to load your complex page, study it and reproduce the problem you are experiencing. Please place them into a .zip file and attach it to a new support ticket that we can track and get resolved for you.

For the VS 2008 stability problem, can you tell me more about this please? If I understand correct, VS is crashing and then Windows is automatically restarting VS for you, correct? Can you tie the crash to any specific action i.e. what were you doing at the time of the crash? I'd like to try and reproduce this if I can. So far you're the only person reporting VS2008 stability problems like this so I'll need your help identifying what's causing the crash.

Greetings,
Cody
