I'm looking at some different map controls to show outlines of states and then have the user zoom in on a state to see the counties.

In the example with shapefiles, this is being done, but the zoom performance is very poor.  I tried in FF4 and IE9.  Is this the expected behavior?

Hello Chris May,

Zooming performance completely depends on the complexity of the shape files (or shape objects) which are in use. We've made several enhancements which significantly decrease zooming time for complex shapes. They are available in the latest internal build and will be included into the 2011.Q2 release.

Do you have optimized shapefiles that are less complex?  I am using shapefiles from the Census Bureau and the performance when zooming is very poor.

Hello Eric,

Yes, we use simplified version of shape files with decreased number of points in shapes. You might try to simplify your shape-files for improving the performance with this online tool:
