I would absolutely love to see a R.A.D Reports to replace my Crystal solution. Just a simple window that you can build reports in and then have the ability to print (without exporting first), but also gives the ability to export to Word (.rtf or .doc), Excel, .pdf, or print directly to printer. I would guess it would also have to allow you to page through the report and zoom in and out. Has this already been mentioned?

Hi Eric,

Other customers have also mentioned their interest in a Telerik Reporting solution so the development of such a product is on our radar.

Could you let us know what you would like to see? What do you think is an overkill in CR? What do you think can be made simpler and more intuitive? What are the must have features for you to make a switch if we release a Reporting product?

Hey I just came across this blog post by Vassil Terziev:

http://blogs.telerik.com/blogs/vt/archive/2006/05/11/216.aspx

Isn't it exciting that telerik will soon offer a reporting solution?!

telerik-

Are there any details on the forth coming reporting product? Is it a web based reporting tool similar to what Eric described in this thread?

Telerik needs a good reporting tool to compete with ComponentOne's offering (and I think telerik can do it better!).

I look forward to hearing more about this upcoming product.

Thanks~

Hello Todd,

Thank you very much for your interest in our new product line.

telerik Reporting is currently in active development phase and will be officially announced at TechEd 2006 in Boston.

Our current plans are to have a preview at our website (mainly screenshots and a short presentation) in the beginning of July with the first beta available in about 2 months. The official release is currently scheduled for late autumn 2006.

These are the key features which we are currently working on:

  • Intuitive API - easy for both WinForms and Web developers
  • Rich set of measurement units (cm, mm, in, px, pt + any combination) for precise report design
  • Extensible report object model - customize or create your own report items
  • Out-of-the-box export to HTML, Excel, PDF, Word, EMF, image (bmp, jpeg, gif)
  • Flexible rendering mechanism - allows you to easily add new output formats (XML, XPS, etc.)
  • Built-in report designers for Visual Studio .Net 2003 and 2005
  • Dynamic CSS-like styling and centralized Themes mechanism for complete control over UI elements

The first version will not be web based.

We will be excited to hear your feedback once we have a beta release.

Kind regards,

Rob

Just so you know, a web based version of telerik Reports would be a no brainer for me to purchase, even if it cost extra.  Crystal reports is so expensive it becomes very limiting.  I get so mad that I can't find a good, affordable solution to dish out reports from my asp.net apps.

Won't be web based? :(  Oh, well...it's a good start.

I've got to agree whole heartedly with Robert; when telerik makes this a web product we will be first in line to give the betas a try and help make this product one of the best on the market for asp.net.

In fact, this past week I've been researching web-based reporting tools for ASP.NET to use in current and future ASP.NET projects. I've been looking for a reporting product that does the following:
  • Allows the easy creation of new report definitions (using a windows or web based designer- in fact, prefebly Windows)
  • Allows new report definitions to be easily published to the web for viewing
  • Allow reports to viewed online or exported to various formats (including Excel, PDF, and HTML)
  • Allow advanced navigation of online reports using a built-in viewer that renders created report definitions

There are some solutions out there, but none done to the level I've come to expect from telerik. I just hope a web based viewer for telerik reports is in the development pipeline and destined for a beta by Q4!

Thanks~

Thank you for your questions, Todd, here are the answers:

  • Allows the easy creation of new report definitions (using a windows or web based designer- in fact, preferably Windows)
We plan to implement VS built-in designer for the official version. Web-based designer will require a lot of work and is scheduled for a future version (either v2 or v3, both due next year)

  • Allows new report definitions to be easily published to the web for viewing
Could you share why you need the report definitions to be published to the web? We plan to have a web viewer which will allow navigation, exporting, etc. Is this what you are looking for? May be a link to an online example of the tools you have tested will help us understand your question.

  • Allow reports to viewed online or exported to various formats (including Excel, PDF, and HTML)
Yes, we plan to offer different reporting formats, as described in my previous post.

  • Allow advanced navigation of online reports using a built-in viewer that renders created report definitions
We have this functionality in mind, but we are not sure that we will have the time to offer the feature in the first version. As we see it, it will be added in v2.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Yours,

Rob

Rob-

Thanks for the additional information. I think I poorly worded my second "requirement"; I meant publish definitions to web for easy report viewing (not easy viewing of the actual definitions).

That said, you basic product sounds good. An easy, graphical Windows-based report builder and a web component that allows users to view those reports and export them to one of several available formats.

Will the basic web viewer be part of the version 1 release?

Thanks~

Great. Keep us posted on how the product comes together; I think there are a lot of eager developers waiting to implement a telerik reporting solution.

I look forward to the betas in September!

Thanks~

If I use a RAD editor to input some HTML into a database, will the RAD Reports web viewer be capable of displaying the output in HTML format?

Sure thing, Eric!

You can bind telerik Reporting elements to any valid DataSource field without any problem. In this case you should use a label in your report and bind it to the respective field containing the HTML saved with r.a.d.editor.

Hi,

Is option of sub-report is also getting incorporated. If so codes can be re-used.

Ability to take field parameter in sub-report is also important so that we can pass the parameter from calling report to sub-report.

Hi Alok,

Yes, we are planning on having the sub-report item and the reports will have parameters.

Is Telerik Reporting going to include the ability to attach a report to an email like the old Crystal solutions were able to do?

Hello Eric,

We have received a similar request before and this functionality will be added to telerik Reporting tool.

You will be able to start a new email with the report as an attachment (something very similar to Widows right-click and "Send To" ... Mail Recipient).

Best wishes,

Hi Guys

Sounds like this will be a great product once it gets to the web-based version.  For the web-based side, having a report selector / viewer is great, agree with Todd that web based report design wouldn't be essential.

One thing is whether the pdf export will be limited to rad reports, or whether it will be its own component?  Having the ability to export rad grids would be fantastic, and rad pdf would be even better (know there has been quite a bit of noise for this in the feature request threads)

Looking forward to giving the beta a whirl!

Thanks for the feedback, Steven.

The pdf creator will be developed for this project only and will be quite basic, at least in its first version. Once we extend its functionality, we may reuse the idea and provide a true r.a.d.pdf for web.

Steven (and others):

There is already a thread in the New Product Suggestions forum talking about the features that we would all like to see in a possible r.a.d.pdf product. I think your suggestion that they spin the pdf creator out of reports eventually is brilliant; I only hope that there is enough interest in the community to compel them to tackle that sooner rather than later.

In the mean time, jump over to the other thread and join the discussion about r.a.d.pdf and let us know what you'd like to see.

Thanks~

I for one am extremely pleased Telerik is jumping into the reporting arena! I have expressed to Vassil in offline emails the features I would like to see. I am sure anything Telerik comes up with would be better than the fragile ComponentOne XtraReports product I am TRYING to use now!

Looking forward to it!

Thanks!

I am excited about this new venture. We've been using some components from DevExpress and I have been somewhat disappointed. While their VCL and Windows components are great, their web versions are clunky and buggy. I'm anxious to see what Telerik reporting looks like.

I think MS Access is a good reporting tool as far as interfaces go. One thing I hope doesn't happen is have the report bound directly to an sql statement or stored procedure. This is the case in Powerbuilder DataWindows and Reporting Services to some degree. I like MS Access because I can change out the query and as long as the field names match with the components everything works. It doesn't matter whether the data comes from a table, query object, sql statement, or sp. This can be extremely flexible for building adhoc reports in applications.

Can't wait to see it in action. Keep up the good work!

Hello,

I hope you are doing well.

It is my pleasure to let you know that we have just released Telerik Reporting Q3 2007. In this release, you will find many new features, including the one you have been asking for - Export to Excel.

The Excel Rendering Extension preserves the look and feel of the original report and gives you the opportunity to manipulate the data locally. It does not rely on the Microsoft Office engine, meaning that you do not need Microsoft Excel installed on the machine. This saves costs for new Office licenses and time-consuming installations. Exported files can be opened on the client with Microsoft Excel 97 and later.

To find out more about the new Telerik Reporting Features, please review What’s New in Telerik Reporting Q3 2007 and the Release Notes.

We will be happy to hear your feedback about the latest version of our reporting product.

Merry Xmas!
