Hello All,

building a RibbonBar with the full implementation of the specification is not a trivial work and will require a lot of efforts (and time). We are planning to implement a more simple "RibbonBar - like" interface for the upcoming editor for Q1.

What are the must features that you would expect from this control?

Are you saying that you are going to build a ribbon bar for the HTML editor or that you plan on delivering a suite of controls that will allow us to create a ribbon bar for our own application. While a ribbon bar for the editor would be cool, I was asking for the ability to easily create a ribbon bar for my application. For this specific post, I was asking for the funtionality in silverlight, however, it would also be cool to have a suite of ribbon bar controls for RAD ASP.NET AJAX.

RH;

I'm not sure you saw that MSFT will be releasing a ribbon for WPF, which I suspect it will make it's way to SL eventually. I think timewise, if Telerik spends their resources on the ribbon, by the time they are done, MSFT version will be out.

Here is a Silverlight Ribbon control from Simon Matthews:

It is pretty nice!

Hi Ben, I actually wasn't aware that MS was coming out with one. Thanks for the info!

Hi Ramon, thanks for the link. I'll check it out.

Hi RH;

I think I'll wait for MSFT implementation. But meanwhile, I'm planning to use Tab with Menu, LayoutPanel and PanelBar inside of each TabPage (small page like one inch height to hold the menus) to simulate the ribbon. This way, I'm not adding a ton of code from Ribbon library.

I did a test project in WinForm a while back (without using LayoutPanel) and it came out very intresting. And I think the LayoutPanel will make it more intresting. Can't wait for the new RadDockingPanel!!! ;-)

Thanks Ramon!

..Ben

Hello All,

@Roy - we are planning to create an Editor for Silverlight. This editor most probably will use the RadEditor for Ajax in order to do the actual text input (e.g the ajax editor will be used only as a rich textbox area). Everything around it will be Silverlight. The developer experience - the API, styling,etc will be entirely on Silverlight from developers point of view. That said - we are planning to do the toolbar with Ribbon look - something similar to what Ramon posted as a link.

Please let us know if you have any feedback on that!

Sincerely yours,

Ben, do you by chance have a link to the MS announcement for a fluent ribbon UI in WPF?

Hello All,

Just to refresh this thread a little bit - we are already working on a RibbonBar for Silverlight and WPF, and the first version of the control will be available with our Q3 release, with probably a beta version around October.2009.

Please let us know for any particular features that you expect!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

As you remember Valio, we had several private discussion about me making my own "Poor's Man" Ribbon, but the outcome didn't come as flexible and dynamic as I wanted, so I didn't use it, however this is a great news. Did I say "Thank you"?

BTW, how could you make it as "Telerik MVP" if you work for Telerik? :-)
Or is that MVP for Silverlight from MS? If yes, then a huge congrats to you my friend. Well deserved!

Hi ..Ben,

Yes - we are also very escited to work on this new control. It is a very complex control and most probably for the v1 in Q3.09 we will not be able to make it to comply fully with the Office fluent UI document ( which is about 200 pages long ), but this is our goal so I'll appreciate any feedback during our early CTP and Beta versions which are expected in 2-3 months from now.

And just to make it clear - the control will be available for both Silverlight3 and WPF.

All the best,

Hi Valio,
You think you'll be able to make it to V1 for Q3? That's fantastic. Honestly, I'm not sure you need to support all the things that were set out in the original Ribbon. In Fact I read somewhere a while back, that even future versions of MS Ribbon will be trimed down due to it's complexity. I'm sure your team will put out a great product and You should get lots of feedback during CTP from others.

Also, I want to take this opportunity to Congradulate you and the team for Q2 delivery!
Thank you guys!

Hi all,

I'm pleased to announce that the Silverlight RibbonBar is now available in Beta version. You can check the demos online and download the code from your accounts.

Please let us know any feedback that you have!

PS: The WPF version of the ribbon will be available within less than a month with the beta2 of the suite. Official release is planned for the beginning of November with our Q3 release.
