Hi lupotana,

The RadMediaPlayer deals with all formats supported by Silverlight 2 platform, but the Flash (flv) format is not supported. More about supported media formats you can find here. For your convenience we paste here some of the article's information:

Silverlight 2 -  Supported Media Formats, Protocols, and Log Fields

Supported Formats.

The MediaElement object supports the following formats. These encodings are supported regardless of the file name extension

  • WMV1: Windows Media Video 7
  • WMV2: Windows Media Video 8
  • WMV3: Windows Media Video 9
  • WMVA: Windows Media Video Advanced Profile, non-VC-1
  • WMVC1: Windows Media Video Advanced Profile, VC-1
  • WMA 7: Windows Media Audio 7
  • WMA 8: Windows Media Audio 8
  • WMA 9: Windows Media Audio 9
  • WMA 10: Windows Media Audio 10
  • MP3: ISO/MPEG Layer-3:
    • Input: ISO/MPEG Layer-3 data stream
    • Channel configurations: mono, stereo
    • Sampling frequencies: 8, 11.025, 12, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, and 48 kHz
    • Bit rates: 8-320 kbps, variable bit rate
    • Limitations: "free format mode" (see ISO/IEC 11172-3, sub clause 2.4.2.3) is not supported.

Unsupported Formats:
  • Interlaced video content
  • Windows Media Screen
  • Windows Media Audio Professional
  • Windows Media Voice
  • Combination of Windows Media Video and MP3 (WMV video + MP3 audio)
  • Windows Media Video using odd (not divisible by two) dimensioned frames; for example, 127 x 135

Hope this information helps you.

All the best,
Ivan

1. Is it possible for me to embed a flash video from say youtube in Silverlight.  If yes can you tell me how to achieve this. Based on the movie type (youtube - swf, MPG) we switch the player to play (if you tube video we embed it over the silverlight and play the video, else we use the Rad Media player). If no can you give me other options using rad media player to acheive this with Sample example.
(I have to play formats supported by silverlight, flash in one video player).

2. Can we Play HD videos using Rad Media Player. If yes can you show me some Samples. Can we play HD videos from youtube using RAD Media Player.

Regards,
Pawan Venugopal

Hello Pawan,

1) Please find attached a sample project that demonstrates one basic solution to this scenario.
2) RadMediaPlayer is a wrapper around Silverlight's MediaElement. Currently the Silverlight plugin does not support playing HD videos from youtube. Please refer to this article on how to deliver HD videos using Silverlight.

Hi Kiril Stanoev,

Thanks for the Sample. I do have one more question. Say i have a RadHtmlPlaceHolder and i embed a flash player in it. IS it possible to determine the end of the video in the flash player and hide the RadHtmlPlaceHolder. Do you have any samples for this?

Hello Pawan,

Currently we do not have such sample. To be honest, I've never thought about a solution for this particular scenario. I believe it can be done by using Javascript, but I am not 100% sure. If you come up with a solution to this case, I'd be glad if could share it with me. Let me know if you have additional questions on the matter.

Sincerely yours,
