I recently used a cool program call windirstat (http://windirstat.info/
) to checkout my filesystem to see if there were any large files i could delete. What I noticed was that there were 2.7GB
of files in the folder: C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temp. Apparently when a service that has the NetworkService as the user dies, it puts the dump files in this directory. For each dump file there is a corresponding temp file that is around 47MB. Well over time it added up. I was wondering why my C drive kept losing space.
I think the main culprit on my machine is the ASP.Net State Server. Almost every time I shut my machine down that sucker bombs out and I get the annoying error dialog. I have to close it before my machine will continue to shutdown.
So if you experience this problem with the State Server also please check the temp directory to see if you can get back a bunch of space.
I also noticed that if you run the Microsoft Test in Visual Studio that it copies all the files it needs for every test in a folder under the TestResults folder. It does not ever delete these. A guy I work with checked his yesterday and had 1GB
worth in the TestResults folder.
