Hi everyone,

I can't tell you how excited I got when I first saw the Visual StyleBuilder. Man, what a tool. At first.

But, what I've found, is that the VSB is behaving sorta funny. Suddenly when editing a grid skin, the view changes to display the grid in "data edit mode", and applied styles are often forgotten an just plain rendered wrong (or not at all).

Maybe I just don't get it. Is there - besides the two short introductory videos - a more comprehensive tutorial and/or documentation for the VSB?

I LOVE the IDEA behind this tool, but currently I'm not sure that it's that big of an advantage over editing stylesheets by hand.

But again... is it just me?

Hi Jeppe,

Currently, the biggest asset of the style builder is the colorization - for really quick modifications. The fine-tuning is by no means complete (and I feel ashamed of some of the interactions which are unintuitive).

The tool will never replace a good hand-written stylesheet - its intent is to ease the burden and make skinning more accessible to everyone.

The grid skinning is only for its most simple form - we'll add more control states soon. If you have other feedback, I'd love to hear it.

Regarding the tutorial/documentation - there isn't any beyond the videos. The problem is caused by the unintuitiveness of the tool - I'll strive to make it in such a way that it doesn't need documentation.

Sincerely yours,
Alex

Thanks for your reply.

Again, I really like the whole idea behind this tool.

I wasn't aware that the tool was not yet "done", I simply thought it was full of errors. :o)
But a clearly visible "BETA" (or whatever) label would've warned me off the bat.

As an idea, how about some tooltips when you hover over a given part of the grid, showing the css element that one could use to fine-tune that element?

Anyways, back to notepad to do the nitty-gritty :-)

Hello Jeppe,

Beta tag: Done.

We'll consider the tooltip idea - I'm afraid that it could clutter the interface, yet we should be able to think of some way to design around it.

Greetings,
