I was planning to trial RAD for SharePoint until I went through the screencast and whitepaper. Quite a bit of work to install even though Telerik seems to have done everything they can to simplify the process.

I agree with you. The only problem I see, is that the wspbuilder only lets you deploy to a site collection at port 80. If you have to deploy to port 443 or any other you're in trouble.
The WSPBuilder team needs to support deploying to any port and to allow you to deploy to global wpresource directory under web server extensions .
