Version of the installer: 4.6.2.30081

While trying to install Fiddler on my (Win10) laptop, the setup initiates and after windows confirmation popup to install- it just disappears. I tried running the installation as local admin, restarting and changing compatibility settings but to no avail. I know another person at my organization is running into the same issue. Can you please help?

Hello,

Sorry about the late reply.

Does the issue still persist? What is the last version of Fiddler that you were able to successfully install on that machine?

Hi,

Which version of Win10 is that? Was Fiddler installed on this machine? Are you doing an upgrade or is it a clean install?

...oh, and yes, Fiddler had been running fine.  I tried to apply an update that was waiting for me and it failed.  So, I uninstalled and tried reinstalling and that failed, too.

I'm having the same issue on my Windows 10 machine as well. I'm getting the following error in the event log:

Access to C:\Users\****\AppData\Local\Temp\Fiddler4Setup.exe has been restricted by your Administrator by location with policy rule {*****} placed on path C:\Users\****\AppData\Local\*\*.exe.

We were able to install by extracting the exe file into a folder and using the exe from the extracted folder..

The log file from my installation has a different error:

I figured out my issue.  First, I opened the binary and found that it is a Nullsoft installer, not a MSI installer.  That pointed me to the EventViewer to find the error messages.  (The error message I had from MSI was an erroneous attempt on my part to get logging info.)

Once I found the logging info, the real error was this:

Access to C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Temp\Fiddler4Setup.exe has been restricted by your Administrator by location with policy rule {70676551-f9f8-426f-acff-2efc50630cb0} placed on path C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\*\*.exe.

So I went to my Local Security Policy editor, Software Restriction Policies/Additional Rules node, and found the offending path which had "Disallowed" and I temporarily changed it to "Unrestricted".  After installing I changed it back.

Hi,

Well that is kinda surprising. When we designed the installer we thought AppData\Local\Temp\ would be the best place to extract temp files to. Apparently that is no more the case in Win 10.

We will definitely fix that. In the meantime extracting installer and running Fiddler4Setup.exe is a good workaround.
