When my page loads the insert template is visible...how do I go about changing that? I just want to show the list of items, and if a user is an admin show them a button to enable the insert.

Hello Steve,
First make sure you have InsertItemPosition set to None, which should prevent the insert form to be shown initially. Then you may use a button with command name set to InitInsert to display the insert form. You may refer to the this demo for an illustration of such approach.
