Hi  Telerik Team,

I have a small query for you. I am working on a application in which we upload different types of MediaFiles for our Portal Application. We need to convert each and every Media file into " WMV" format. But now Silverlight3 supports some more formats like (*MPG,AVi etc etc.) but incase of Flv, it really disturbs . If we convert the video into wmv format in most of the cases the video is corrupted. I just want to know is there any way for Telerik Controls to play these Flv Videos because this is very important for us.I know this is related to Silverlight but i think Telerik should think about these querys, Because when we are developing a product it should be flexible with everything. I expect Telerik Team will look at this query deeply and i frankly say this is really needful.Hope you will try to resolve my query in near future.

Thanks

Kalyan

Hi kalyan,

We are using the Silvrelight platform to play the movie files and the flv is not supported as you know.

Can you elaborate a little bit more on the conversion of the FLV to WMV. What problems are you facing?

Valentin,
In our application inorder to play the flv video files we were using a third party  library which converts flv to wmv format so that it can be playable in Silverlight. But the Aspect ratio ,visualization of the video is almost lost and the quality of the converted video is almost bad.In this link http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9114374 we came to know that Silverlight supports HD Flash video. So we decided skip the converson of flv to wmv which seems to be useless for us.But till now we found nothing that can fulfill our requirement. So if you have any solution regarding this problem plz share with me.

Thanks

Hello kalyan,

Microsoft do not support flv format at all - it is written in the article:
------- qte --------
Silverlight 3 won't be able to play .flv or .swf content, said Sklepowich. But it will be able to play H.264-based .f4v content.
------- /qte --------

I assume you should convert your videos by to Silverlight compatible format in order to use Silverlight. Searching on internet there appears to be manny converters that do this job. You can try different converters until you find the one that suits you. We do not plan to write our home grown converter and this moment.

Kind regards,

Valentin,

Thanks for your reply. I know it is a big thing for you to add a new component. But i think we must try ourselves to solve our own issues. I hope Telerik will have this coponent near future. I am now looking at the link sent by you. Again thanks for your assitance.

I have another idea. You Can use Telerik HTML placeholder and then embed a flash video, the same way you would with any HTML page. Place the HTML place holder right in your SL page and play flash right there!

Ben and Valentin,

Your idea is good  and now we are using this same approach but in different way.You are asking to put the flash video in a HTML place holder and we for this time using different application for flash. But we have several circumstances. We are using the Silverlight MediaPlayer for Single video,Multiple videos and For Annotation Players.Your idea will work fine for my Single and MultiPlayers. But  In annotation players we need to draw on the video for commenting on the specific scene. If we use Flash for our application we need to add a lot of extra code to our application.I donot understand the concept of HTML place holder  bcoz i am unaware of this control. This is not a issue!.According to our design purpose we are creating our controls using silverlight controls only. I don't think HTML place holder is a Silverlight based control and you can't use Flash Controls inside Silverlight application as per my knowledge.IThis is my view of this issue. If i will use flash and silverlight simultaneously i will face the problem of homogenous applications because the two controls may or maynot look or behave alike.I think you can understand my circumstances. But i will look your view and i will try to put things according your advice. Thanks for your advise. Incase you can find any alternative solution plz let me know.

Thanks

Kalyan

@Valentin;
Exactly! Personally I don't like mixing these together but from a technical point of view, I suggested that!
