Hello,

So far, reproduced in Safari for the Mac, and Chrome on Vista.  The following paragraph has spaces between all of the words it should when I paste it.  However, after postback, it will have some of the spaces removed.  It appears random, and it's not always the same words.  Also, you have to have over a certain length (I believe) of text before the problem manifests.  I've reproduced it solely by pasting from OpenOffice and Word.  One of my users says she's not pasting at all, and is still experiencing the problem.

I have a ticket in for this, but I'm hoping someone has run across this and found a solution, since so far, it doesn't look promising on the support side.  They've sent me a video of text being put into the editor and it not removing spaces.  Heh.  Anyway, here goes:

GroupCalendar provides an in-game calendar for planning, signing up, andmanaging events. It can be configured for single-guild use or formulti-guild alliances. There it is.  "GroupCalendar" should have a space.  "andmanaging" should also.  "formulti-guild," "calendarfor," "configuredfor" are the other ones.  The spaces were there when I pasted.  I hit reply and boom -- all gone.  This is what many, many of my users are experiencing.  Very bad.  Help?

Edit: Also, reproduced this on the demo page for the editor.

Hi Aaron,

Can you send us the original OpenOffice document you use as a source for pasting content? So far we have not received this document, yet it might provide important clue for solving the issue.

In your support ticket you indicate that the problem could occur even if pasting text that itself was copied from the editor's content area. Yet, this text (let's call it text1) itself could have been originally produced in OpenOffice and pasted inside the editor.

The editor will not strip any spaces from content that originates from it. The origin of the problem is likely that OpenOffice (in certain cases) represents a space character with some specific symbol. This is why we really need the document itself in order to do the testing on our end properly.

It's been sent as an attachment with the ticket.  Do keep in mind, however, that it's not limited to OpenOffice; it happens with Word as well.

Hi Aaron,

Unfortunately, I am still unable to reproduce this odd problem even using the provided open office odt file. I attached two videos demonstrating my test in Safari 4 on MAC.
Could you please see the videos and let me know if I am missing some steps in the test?

Best wishes,

I'm experiencing this problem also.  we're not even pasting into the Editor.  We are programmatically adding content.  For us, it started happening when we upgraded to RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX Q1 2009 from Q2 2008.

On top of that, it can be reproduced in the demo editor.  They sent me the latest batch of videos of them using the test document I sent them, and it didn't happen when they did it, but the steps they took weren't exactly the same, so I was more thorough in outlining them this time.

Hopefully we'll both get a resolution to this soon, Paul.

Oh and one thing I did notice them doing in one of the videos -- the "Editor / Save in External File" one -- was switching from Design mode, to HTML, then back to Design mode.  Something a few of my users have reporting also having to do before being able to edit content.  But we can deal with that one later... :)

Hey Paul (and anyone else experiencing this),

They were finally able to reproduce it, using the video I sent in.  It took two rounds, since they had a pretty old version of OpenOffice installed.  Their advice was to tell my users to use FireFox, and to remind them to use the Paste from Word button.  Of course, I can't tell over a million active users what browser to use; I've gotten blasted before for recommending one browser over another...

Anyway, the plot thickens!  Microsoft Word does the same thing when pasting from Chrome, in IE, on the PC!  They wanted another video, to prove it.

So I gave them one better -- a plain old HTML document from TextEdit (Mac's version of Notepad), pasted into the editor while in HTML mode, showing spaces where they should be.  On postback?  Bam, spaces gone.

Now, since I did up a video and all, and since it's very possible I won't hear from them for another 4 days (that happened last weekend), I uploaded the video to YouTube to share with you guys here.

Hi guys,

I already replied to Aaron in his support ticket, but I would also like to mention it here - we have tracked down and fixed the problem with disappearing spaces in Safari/Chrome and the fix will be included in the next service pack release/internal builds on our site. The problem is present only in version Q2 2009 (2009.2.701).

We continue to encounter this problem running on IE 7.

Please let me know if you require more detail or if any resolutions are available.

Kind Regards.

Hello Paul,

The fix that I mentioned is only for WebKit based browsers and version Q2 2009. I can see that you have opened a support ticket about your issue. If possible, send us a sample HTML content of the editor, that we can use to reproduce the error here. This will help us track down the problem with the RadEditor.Text property and fix it.

hello,

I have some controls in page containing form. it also contains a radeditor. if i type some thing in the editor and press enter key for new line, initially it shows no problem. then if click on some other control in the same page and the page postbacks, the new line in the editor is replaced by %0. THIS HAPPENS IN SAFARI BROWSER.

Ex.
Abcdfdfdkf
asdsakfl
dfdsfldf

this gets replaced as
Abcdfdfdkf%0asdsakfl%0dfdsfldf

plz suggest something on this, why it happens.

Hi,

We have a similar issue logged in our database - if you are using a very old version of the editor (before safari 4 or chrome 1 was released), the new lines are replaced with $0. Please update to a more recent version of RadEditor to fix this issue (any release from 2009 and later should be OK).

Hi Sumit,

I have the following suggestions to fix this problem:
  • The first one is to upgrade to the latest version of RadEditor for ASP.NET AJAX Q1 2010 SP2 (version 2010.1.519)
  • If the upgrade does not solve the problem register the external skins of RadEditor:
    - from a CDN server: CDN Support
    - or from external css files: Registering an external skin of RadEditor.

If you still experience the problem, please isolate it in a sample working project and send it for examination on our side through a support ticket.

Best regards,

hi,
i'm using radeditor control. it has a required field validator attached to it. but if enter only a space or new-line character in the editor, it allows them, however required field validator should not allow blank space or new-line character. i know that new-line or blank space is replaced by some other symbol like '\n' or '\r', but i dont want it like that, it should take blank space and new-line as empty string. so how apply validation for that.

Hi Sumit,

Indeed, when you hit space or enter key, a &nbsp; entity or <br> / <p> tag is inserted in the content area, which is a valid HTML content and for this reason the RequiredFieldValidator is not fired.

What you can do to cover your scenario is to implement you custom validator which will be fired when the content area contains only &nbsp; entities, <p> and <br> tags.

You can see how to implement and attach a custom validator to RadEditor in this live demo: Using RadEditor with ASP.NET Validators.
