Hello Telerik,

I'm having difficulties with the reporting designer interface which makes it very time-consuming to use it at the moment.
I'm trying to build a report which is now 2 pages long and the behaviour described occurs when the vertical scrollbar becomes visible.

1. When I'm at the bottom of the report and I select multiple textboxes in the detail section (by drawing a selection-rectangle), the screen 'jumps' to the top of this section. This seems to happen mostly when I first click beside of the report, that is: the yellow-ish area between the vertical scrollbar and the white report area itself. Subsequent clicking on this area and the yellow-ish part causes the report to jump up and down, resulting in a lot of annoying and unnessesarily clicking/dragging to get back to the place where I was.
2. This behaviour happens also when I have selected a number of textboxes and when I unselect them (by clicking on a bit of white space).
3. Deleting an item at the bottom of the detailsection causes the report again to jump to the top of the section.
4. Inserting a databound item near the top of the section, selecting it again and dragging it into another place causes the report to jump to the bottom of the section. I can no longer see the selected control. Selecting it again causes the same behaviour. And then again and again and again.
5. The screen jumping up and down causes unwanted selections of controls and sometime controls being dragged away from its original spot.

I don't know if there are other users who experience this behaviour. I'm going to have to build numerous reports in the weeks to come and with this behaviour I'm already getting a bit of a head-ache.

I hope you can reproduce this behaviour and, more important, have a solution for it.

Thank you, Geert

Some minutes ago before I read this thread I send a ticket with a variation of this :P

I found the same issue but on horizontal style. If the witdh of working area are bigger than the designer window the report jumps left in any case that i click an item or drag it on the report.

Well I didn't read this thread when I post the ticket so, telerik guys, sorry for duplicate theme.

Regards

David Tomás

Hi guys,

This is a known issue that we will target for the upcoming version Q1 2008. This behavior is definitely irritating especially if you are designing large reports. If the report is too long you may collapse the above sections while working on the bottom sections.

Sincerely yours,

Hi Svetoslav,

despite my very good experiences so far with your controls and your high supportlevel I'm not happy at all with your answer.
You're telling me to wait almost 3 whole months for a solution for a serious problem. I think maybe you're underestimating the impact of this problem here.
As mentioned earlier, I have to build dosens of long reports in the weeks to come. The reported (mis)behaviour is too big a problem for effective use this way, at least in my case with the many long reports. I foresee it's going to take me many many many extra hours to get things right, apart from the needless cost and increasing irritation.
I don't have any problems with workarounds in using software which is in a particular stage of development as long it has basic desired behaviour or when reported bugs (in basic desired behaviour ) are being solved within reasonable time. 3 Months is far, far from reasonable I think. I can't think for any reason I would tell my costumers to wait for 3 months for solving a serious problem in software I delivered. I'd rather eat my dog, if I had one.
I hope I'm making my point here and hope you understand that your softwareproblem is also my problem!

Regards

Geert

Hello guys.

We do understand the seriousness of this problem and we do not underestimate it in any way. We want our products to have as few issues as possible and we are working hard every day to make this happen. We are giving our best to create usable and performing products, but sometimes this is more challenging than it seems.

The Report Designer is actually part of the Visual Studio and operates in a very complicated environment. As such, it heavily depends on the whole IDE system, just as the system depends on the Report Designer. Its development and improvement is time-consuming and requires extensive research. We also need to make sure that everything works - we do not want to break Visual Studio, because this will impact our clients' daily activities in a very unpleasant manner. I estimate the whole process to take us four to six weeks once we start working on it. There a few things that our developers are currently working on, and I can assure you that they will switch to this problem as soon as they finish their current tasks. Actually, we had to drop a couple of smaller features from our plans in favor of this issue.

This is with high priority on our ToDo list and will surely be fixed for the April release. In case we manage to resolve it before that, we will provide a build (be it beta or pre-release) which you can use to continue with your development. My estimate this to happen is a couple of weeks before the official release in April. This is the best we can do, I am afraid, because the issue requires a lot of work.

Please, let us know whether this is feasible with your projects.

Hi Svetoslav,

thank you for your extensive answer, I appreciate that and your effort to get this higher on your to-do list .
I fully understand your explanation; I know how time-consuming (unexpected) things can be in software development and I know how it feels to tell costumers things aren't going the way it was planned (and I now know the feeling what it's like to be dependent on others!).
But concerning my project, I just have to move on then, deal with the 'inconveniences' (that's sounds positive, isn't it?) and hope that you guys find time quickly to solve this issue. What else can I do? Despite all the good things (let's not forget that) it isn't 'fun' to work with this particular piece of software right now and that's an understatement. Choosing another reporting tool is not an option in this stadium, but I honestly don't know what I had done if I knew this in an earlier stadium.

Regards

Geert

Hi guys,

We are pleased to announce that we have just released the Q1 2008 version of Telerik Reporting, featuring a new and innovative design surface, which solves the usability issues discussed here. The new version should be available for download in your Client.net accounts. If you are a customer and you do not see the DEV versions yet, please be patient - we are updating our client's accounts with the latest versions as we speak.

Hello Telerik team,

well what can I say! This new release solves my problems above and solves even more thanks to (unexpected) new features (such as the yellow comments if there are overlapping controls)!! But also the improved Preview in the designer environment. Great! The new designer looks and ''feels'' very good too. Is this also a next step to an end-user designer?
Well, you made at least one developer very happy this week!

Greetings,

Geert

Thank you for the kind words Geejay!

Indeed this is a step forward to an end-user designer which we would be working on for the next few releases. Our current goal is to finish up with the reporting core and then we would focus entirely in that direction.

Kind regards,
