    telerik-

The last few quarterly releases that I've actively participated in have had a lot of excitement building up to the "release date" published on the telerik Road Map. Then the release date comes and no new quarterly release is available. We are all left wondering what happened and constantly refreshing our Client.net pages to get the release.

Missing a release date is okay with me, especially knowing that the extra time will ensure a top-notch release that won't require a SP in a week. The break down in this process is communication.

Telerik has some great product blogs and a very active community forum that could be used to provide better communication to all of us anxious developers during a release. I think we would all appreciate a post from telerik on the day of a scheduled release letting us know if it's still on or if it has been delayed (and for how long, if possible). That will help us adjust our plans and schedules and reduce our frustration when we just get silence on the day of the scheduled release.

I know you guys are working hard and that this will be another great telerik release! Just take a second and formally let us know what's going instead of making us fish for the information in miscellaneous forum posts.

    Thanks~

I was sure that I needed to take some action on Friday and let you guys know that we were going to be late a day or two!!! But then, all of us were hoping that the weekend will be enough for us to finish the release on time. I guess I should have posted this on Friday anyway, so note is taken, Todd!

We updated the Road map a couple of hours ago, but this surely is not enough. So I may as well post it here:
We will be ready late tomorrow evening, and if all goes smoothly the new release will be live on www.telerik.com by about 1pm American central time (8-9pm in Europe). If problems pop up, we will be releasing on Wendesday as we prefer to upload new versions and make changes to our site in the morning. This way we can fix any problems that emerge on time.

I think that the new suite will be well accepted by our community, so we will be expecting your feedback :)

Todd, your comments will be taken into consideration the next time around and we will keep you updated on the releases. We will also try to not be late any more, even for a day :)

    All the best,

    Vassil-

Thank you very much for the complete update! I know you guys are working hard and that the product you release will be spectacular.

I appreciate your consideration of my comments and I only hope they will improve the customer experience during quarterly releases. I'll look for the Q2 release tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon around 1 PM or I'll look for an update if the release is to be delayed until Wednesday.

Keep up the good work. You've managed to create product that has great demand!

    Thanks~

This is really the only issue I get a teeny bit aggravated about - communication during releases. 'Tis the end of September today and no word about Q3. Delays happen and I'm okay with that; I'd just like to see some sort of communication that "hey, the release date is going to slip - ETA is blah".

Around release time I feel like a kid anticipating Christmas, or a Apple fan (typing this on my Mac) waiting for the WWDC keynote.

Otherwise, as far as everything else telerik (especially the fantatic support), I feel like I'm rolling in puppies.

    Many thanks,

    Sean

Unfortunately several small things popped up and we weren't able to release on Thursday/Friday and had to push the release a bit.

The release date for r.a.d.controls for ASP.NET Q3 2006 has been moved for Tuesday, October 3, 2006.

I hope that the slight delay will not take away even a bit of your excitement and you will be able to fully enjoy the latest telerik releases next week.

Thanks for your understanding and support guys!

    Best,
    Vassil

I will also add in that I wish there was more communication at release time. I was very anxious about this release and went to check today because I new the release was end of september, and they aren't there! ARRRRGGG! so irritating...

As a commercial developer myself nothing bothers me more than having to state a release date, it's just unnatural, my feeling is always that it's "done when it's done" but people expect it and often need to plan around it.

There is a tried and true business principle that is particularly applicable to release dates called "Under-promise and over-deliver".

I.E. in early planning in June you're pretty certain that an estimated release of September 30th is going to be dead on, you automatically add a few more weeks onto that date when you publish the projected release date, i.e. "October 15th" or "End of October".

When you release earlier than your internal projection (or on October 3rd) everyone is pleased except your competitors.

Nothing has actually changed but the perception of things in the eyes of the customers.

Of course sometimes releases will always take as long as the published date no matter how hard you try. <grin>

    Hello Steve,

We updated the respective Forum post in the r.a.d.controls Forum yesterday, noting that we had troubles with our internal server: r.a.d.controls Q3 release. We will have the controls uploaded today.
