Hi Guys,

I downloaded a trial of Icenium for visual studio as I was interested in:  Support for TypeScript, CoffeeScript, LESS, and SASS.

I have not been able to work out how to create coffeescript files for an Icenium project, could someone point me in the right direction please?

Regards,
    James

Hello James,

Currently you cannot add and use a Coffeescript/TypeScript file into the Icenium template. We would research on whether it is possible to allow adding TypeScript into our templates and if applicable, would do our best to include it for subsequent version of the product.

Thank you for the understanding and sorry for the temporary inconvenience.

Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for you reply, this is frustrating as I spent a day trying to figure it out because it was listed on the supported features list displayed on the product page. May I suggest you remove that from the feature list if it is not actually available and prevent anyone else from wasting their time?

Regards,

Hello James,

I'm sorry for the caused inconvenience. Just to clarify. Are you referring to the first bullet in the "While enjoying your favorite Visual Studio features:" paragraph on this page that announces the Icenium Visual Studio extension? If this is the case, these are all Visual Studio features which we mention that exist in Visual Studio and you can benefit from using while having also the Icenium platform’s cross-platform capabilities, introduced by our extension.

Please let me know if this text has misled you. If so, I'll ask our marketing team to clarify it.

Regards,
Vladi

Hi Vladi,

Yes, I was referring to the bullet point that read

"Support for TypeScript, CoffeeScript, LESS, and SASS."

However when I tried to add a new coffeescript file to the project in VS, I could not see it as an option under the new item menu. Steves reply confirms this "Currently you cannot add and use a Coffeescript/TypeScript file into the Icenium template. "

I found the bullet point misleading as I was expecting to create a new Icenium project using the template in Visual Studio and then be able to add a new Coffeescript file.

Regards,
    James

Thanks for removing the misleading bullet, but I REALLY want to use TypeScript in my Visual Studio AppBuilder project.  Can you provide an update on Telerik's plan for this feature?

Also, can you comment on this idea while we wait for this feature:

In Visual Studio (in the solution containing the AppBuilder project), create a web project that matches the structure of the AppBuilder project.  Use "linked files" to bring the compiled javascript files into the AppBuilder project.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for bringing up the question. Actually adding TypeScript support is in our short-term plan, namely we are aiming to have official TypeScript support (including in the AppBuilder Extension for Visual Studio) for our next major release - 2.2 (which should be available in a month and a half or two months).

As for the second feature request "Create a web project (in Visual Studio) that matches the structure of the AppBuilder project.  Use "linked files" to bring the compiled javascript files into the AppBuilder project." - it still doesn't work but there's a working workaround. What you can do is create a web project side-by-side in the same folder in which you've created the AppBuilder project and it should work as expected. Please let me know if this works for you.

Kind regards,
Vladi

Awesome & Awesome :)

Is there a way to mark your comment as the answer?  (I'm probably missing something obvious)

in the interest of completeness for others searching for typescript support: (from the blog link below):

Full TypeScript Support: The popularity of TypeScript (Microsoft's answer for a strongly typed JavaScript) is growing every day.

That's just one reason why we are pleased to now offer full support for TypeScript in all of our IDEs (in-browser client, Windows client, and Visual Studio extension).

This means that you can create new TypeScript files, add existing ones to your projects, use TypeScript type definition files, and compile TypeScript to JavaScript - all with syntax coloring, error and warning notifications, and structural highlighting for your TypeScript code.
