Is this intentional?

Hello Grant Drury-Green,
Indeed the DefaultItem property could be set only through code in run-time. This is by design because the menu items list could be dynamically created in run time as well. However, it is possible to include design time support at least for the items created through items editor in design. I have logged this as feature request and updated your Telerik points.
