I've tried a .jpg and a .png file. Whenever I select either I get an alert telling me that only .jpg, .jpeg and .png files are acceptable!

I'm sorry for the troubles you faced while using TeamPulse.
This is a known issue and it is only reproduced with IE8. One workaround to upload the image is to try using other browser.
