If you generate the style fo RadScheduler in Expression Blend, you will find the AppointmentBackground brush which you can change. It is referenced from the AppointmentItemTemplate.
If you choose to use the RadScheduleView control, however, you will be able to make use of the AppointmentStyleSelector and apply styles to appointments. Furthermore, since orientation of appointment items is supported through styles, you will be able to have one background brush for horizontal appointments, and another for vertical appointments, for example.
