It is our pleasure to announce the availability of the first “Futures” Build of RadControls “Prometheus”. We are dedicated to involve the community early in the development process and to hear your feedback along the way towards our Q2 release in September. The first “Futures” Build introduces two new controls in the “Prometheus” suite: the brand new RadScheduler as well as a much improved new version of RadChart.

    DOWNLOAD LINK

Key Highlights of the new additions in the RadControls “Prometheus” suite:

    RadScheduler:

    • Day, Week and Month View provide excellent flexibility for displaying appointments
    • Inline and Advanced editing capabilities
    • RadScheduler is shipped with a set of skins that allow you to build slick interfaces. The skin can be easily switched using a single property. (More skins will be added in the upcoming “Futures” Builds)
    • Custom resources add flexibility to your schedules and allow you to assign appointments to different users (for instance)
    • Recurring appointments are fully supported by RadScheduler
    • RadScheduler’s flexible API and events provide numerous convenient options for customization
    • Rich client-side behavior: appointments can be rescheduled through drag and drop and resizing

    ONLINE DEMOS

    RadChart:

    • RadChart now introduces a new rendering engine which optimizes performance and produces a polished chart image
    • RadChart now supports spline curve areas. The curve behaves the same way the normal spline curve does, but also offers the possibility to fill the belonging area.
    • RadChart now features a so-called "strict mode" for bar series. All XValues will be respected and bars will be positioned according to their XValues. If, however, you don't have any series items with XValues then RadChart will resume standard sequential ordering of each item.
    • RadChart now supports empty values approximation. If your dataset is missing a value RadChart can approximate it for you.
    • Scalebreaks are a new feature of RadChart which allows you to "break off" large chunks of the axis so that graphs with great amplitudes are easier to read.
    • The new intelligent labels feature of RadChart dramatically increases readability in very busy charts.
    • The charting engine now supports newline in all chart labels
    • The new Marked Zones now provide another option for chart customization

    ONLINE DEMOS

RadControls “Prometheus” Futures Build is intended for preview only and we do not recommend using the bits in production. The controls are still in development and QA phase.

It is our goal to produce regular “Futures” Builds in the coming weeks towards the Q2 release in September. RadWindow and RadEditor are the next controls to be added in the “Futures” Builds. Your feedback will be highly appreciated – please do not hesitate to share any suggestions or comments you might have.

    Best Regards,
    Telerik Team

These futures look great and I'll be trying them out soon. One question before I download. I noticed the link is to a "trial" version. Is there a developer version for license holders? Or is there only trial versions of these futures?

    Thanks,

    Hi there,

RadScheduler seems fantastic in terms of usability. We want to use it like in the "Resource Grouping" example having multiple resources (people, rooms, etc) for the same day. I tried to move things between the rooms in this example but then I found that those are actually 3 instances of RadScheduler. Will the final version support multiple resources by day? This is a must for applications like booking appointments so I think that this feature should be really usefull.

    Keep up the great work!

    Hello,

The "Futures" build is intended as a preview only and is not recommended to use in production. That is why we have shipped only in trial mode. Once we have a beta release in September the "Futures" bits will be merged with the official "Prometheus" version and will be available in both trial and dev mode in you Client.Net accounts.

The "Telerik is undefined" error may occur because of the time difference. For some reason assemblies whose file date is in the future fail to serve web resources. We will try to address that issue soon.

Indeed that example is using three separate schedulers because RadScheduler currently does not support that kind of view. However we plan to add such a feature and we would like to get some feedback about it. Should the "Resource" view work in day view only? If not - how should it look visually in week and month view? Another thing which we are still not sure how to implement is which particular resources to include in the view - all or user specified (or support both).  I would be glad if you share your thoughts with us.

Only having a trial version available limits the desire to learn these products right now.

As I understand - besides the Scheduler and Chart component - the rest of the build is the current Prometheus version. So what’s the harm?

    Hello Flemming,

The trial version is fully functional and contains everything that the dev version has. The only limitation is that it displays a random (about once in every 10 refreshes) copyright message. All design-time and run-time features are completely identical. If you really need a developer version of the assembly please send us a message through our ticketing system and we will be happy to provide you with the dev DLL.

Please refer to our blogs for more info on the "Futures" builds:
    -------
"Futures" builds are separate from the Go-live Beta builds of RadControls "Prometheus" and they are available only as a trial. As we’ve previously mentioned, the controls that are with a Go-live status come with a developer build and are ready for use in production despite the Beta tag (which just signifies our new development approach and the fact that the "Prometheus" suite is yet incomplete). Once a control is ready for prime time, we will move it from the Futures build to the Go-live one. Essentially this means that the new Scheduler and Chart should make the transition in September. Once they are moved from the Futures and join the existing controls with Go-live licenses, their release cycle will be the way you know them: 3 releases per year, service packs, etc. Until September, they will be offered only in trial version, though, so if you would like to use them in production before that time, just let us know.
    -------

    Best wishes,
    Ivo

We think that these features below are essential for a scheduling component and will make your component far superior to others.
Regarding your comment about which resources to display for a day view, I think that the developer should have the ability to display a sub set of all the resources based on the functionality of the application

    • Ability to show schedule tasks for multiple resources by day (resources on Y axis and time on X axis at the top). In other words ability to show tasks/appointments for multiple resources on the same day view.
    • Ability to divide each day into time slots (Ex: divide the day into 4 hr slots or 15 mins slots and then display the tasks).
    • Ability to group resources (Ex: All Developers, All Project Managers etc)
    • Change the task duration for resource using drag or move to an entirely different time duration by drag and drop.
    • Ability to assign a task to a different resource using drag and drop.
    • Ability to double click a task and edit it (changing duration, changing resource etc)
    • Have tasks/appointments with multiple states (e.g. published - viewable by all and planned - viewable only by some).
    • Ability to *show* tasks with in task.
Ex: A resource has a default in and out time for a given day. This is his 'Work day' task. During this work day he will perform many small tasks. The component should be able to show the small tasks with in the main 'work day' task. At the very least the component should allow the resource row to be colored/styled for a given duration (say 8AM to 5PM) and then all the tasks during that duration can be shown on that row.
    • Robust client side API model including adding, removing and editing tasks (all the meta data) so that we can work with tasks on the client side using client API and when we are ready we can use the ASP.net 2.0 JSON features such as Page methods to persist the data. The benefits with this approach can be many depending on the situation.  Having this ability can be huge.

    Hello Raj,

Thank you for your feedback. I will comment briefly your suggestions:
    • This ability ("Resource Grouping" as we refer to it at the moment) is currently in the works. Our idea is a bit different, though - resources will be grouped on the X axis and the time will remain on the Y axis. We believe this will result in a more consistent look.
    • Time slots are already part of RadScheduler - they default at 30 minutes, but are user configurable.
    • Resources are grouped by definition, by their resource type. Please, explain in more detail your idea to provide more to-the-point answer for you.
    • Resizing by dragging the lower end of the appointment and drag and drop moving are implemented features.
    • Editing is done by double click. There is an inline and advanced form.
    • States can be represented as a resource.
    • We do not plan nesting tasks. It will add much complexity in the implementation and will convolute the API.
    • We understand the importance of the client-side API and we will try to make it as easy to use and flexible as possible.

    Kind regards,

    Hello Tsvetomir,
First of all, thanks so much for your comments.
Here are some of my comment.

Unelss you have a clever way, I think showing resoruces on X axis by group can be limited in terms of how many resources are shown etc.   It is not very natural IMHO.  I am not sure if consistency should be the goal in this particular case.  At the very least the control should support both views and can default to the 'Resources on X-axis' view.

I think Resource grouping by resource type should work.  In my example 'Developer" can be the resource type there.  I think we are on the same page there.  Let me know if your undetstanding is different

I am not sure how states can be represented as resources.  State is like a status on the appointment/task.  Can you please give an example of how you were visualizing this?

If you do not plan on nesting taks then can you please provide a way to style/color a particular duration (Ex:8AM to 5PM) for a resource?  This would be a row-wise operation in case when the resources are shown on Y-axis and would be a column-wise operation when resources are shown on X-axis.  In the end we would still be styling a cell (resource for an unit of time)

    Thanks again
    Raj

It is very nice to see this has finally come to be a product we can see and use. Thank everyone that had anything to do with making this happen. I have been asking for this since '05. Very nice job.

While messing with the demo i noticed that there is no validation. I can enter text in a date field and so on. I would think this would have Telerik date picker and time picker for things such as this and validation on anything that required a certain format.

The other disapointing feature that i was hoping for was a month span view. Where you could specify a number of months to show with a start month and year. So if a client wanted to see 4 months in advance then you could specify a span or 4 starting at Feb 2007. That would show Feb, March, April and May of 2007. This would be a view that only highlights days that had activities on them.

The other thing i was hoping for was a gantt chart. But from the many threads i have read i can see that others feel the same way.

Pleas don't take the comments as a negative. They are not ment to be. I am very happy with what i see and look forward to what the future has to being.

    thank you all
    jason

    Hi Raj,

We will consider the option "Resource grouping" to work on both axises, but initially it will probably be available in the "Resources on X" variation as the other option will require extensive modification of the rendering logic.

We can define states by using the "Resources" concept quite easily. Just define a resource type "State" with the possible values of "Published" and "Planned" for example. Then we can query for this resources to implement our business logic.

We will most probably implement the concept of business hours as it is just common sense to have it. It will be possible to apply custom styles to the cells that fall into this category. The coloring by resource and hour sounds like a special case of this feature and most certainly will be possible.

Jason, we will integrate our date picker and implement some validation in the advanced edit form for our next release. We will also consider the multi-month view and GANTT chart functionality, but we do not plan them to be included in the initial release.

    Sincerely yours,

re the scheduler, would a single left click be able to bring up a context menu which I could use to, for example, add pre-set appointment types?

..so If I wanted i could have items on it like:
      - "Add meeting with boss" (auto adds a 1 hour meeting at selected time)
      - "Add meeting with girlfriend" (auto adds a 2 hour meeting)
      - "Add custom meeting.." (popups up a usercontrol for editing)

    cheers

    Hi Ewart,

This sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately, this will require new client side-events as it is impossible to get the clicked time slot at the moment. Also, our support for manipulating the appointments on the client is still a work in progress.
We will definitely consider implementing such integration example with RadMenu as the features are implemented.

Bugger - consider it a feature request :)

Even if I can't get the time - would I still be able to popup a context menu then from that load my user control?  (I could then insert my own default time.. not as ideal but would still achieve what I have in mind in an ok way)

I want to add myself to the list of people who would like very much a good multiday-event support.
    • For my purposes I would like to be able to create those events in the month view - like you create an event for a day, but over several days.
    • I also would be interested to have a "only horizontal" month view, meaning that I have the month days 1-31 in one line, with buttons to move in half month steps. (so that you have a chance do drag an event with the mouse in the next month)
    • Same as above, but with a scalable scoope (to show 14 days for example). Again with half scoope steps

Beside - looks phantatic what I have seen so long. Great. And I know that not everything is possible in a first release - it's just to let you know what could be interesting for at least one user :-)

I wanted to add my perspective (vote) to two types of features that a few others have noted:

First, in our industry, we have a strong need for a display where the various resources are represented as rows and a continuous timeline is represented horizontally. So, you would scroll vertically to see all the resources (there may be a few dozen), and scroll horizontally to see the various reservation bars on each resource over time. This is sort of like a Gantt chart with multiple non-overlapping reservations (bars) on each row.

Second, the timeline is continuous across multiple day boundaries (the normal user would be studying a multi-day period) because the reservations can begin or end on any day at any time (not just whole days).

    Keep up the good work,
    Matt

    Hello Klaus,

We are working on a new rendering mechanism that will allow greater flexibility and custom views. We will consider your suggestions once this is done.

Matthew, the "Time Line View" has been requested a lot and it is a part of our plans, but it will not be ready most probably until the second major release of RadScheduler.

I must agree - this is really a disappointment.   This is just like taking a kid to a candy store and say:  see what you can have in two months ... but you can only look now!

The scheduler is exactly what I'm needing for our application which is going to be launched during august.  So what do we do?  Wait until september just to get rid of the trial message - or choose another scheduler?!

I can understand this for non-registered users - but what about us paying customers?

    Hi all,

Due to popular demand RadScheduler is now available as a download in your Client.net accounts. The "Futures" build is available with a DEV license to all customers with valid subscription and as a TRIAL to all other community members.

    Please see attached screenshot.

DISCLAIMER: Although a lot of customers have already expressed their great enthusiasm about the features and stability of the new RadScheduler, we want to stress that the Futures Build is intended for preview and we do not usually recommend using the bits in production. The controls are still in development and QA phase and some problems might appear.

    On the Exchange 2007 API:
We have not considered utilizing the Exchange 2007 API so far.  Do you mean import/export of appointments between RadScheduler and Exchange 2007 servers via Web Services?

    Hi Tsvetomir,

Thanks for the letting us know that the "time line view" will probably not be available until the second major release of RadScheduler. I was disappointed to hear that, but I can understand why. Do you have any early estimates as to when this second release may be available? I am asking b/c we are currently creating a scheduling application that we need this functionality for and will most likely have to implement another component (probably ComponentGo Web Scheduler) until RadScheduler supports this functionality, since we will need to deliver this to our customers before the end of the year. However, I would like to switch to RadScheduler as soon as this is available and wanted to start planning that out. So if there is any opportunity to bump up the "time line view", please consider this an official vote for that. :-) Thanks.

I also wanted to add that in Matt's description of the "time line view" he mentions the following:
"So, you would scroll vertically to see all the resources (there may be a few dozen), and scroll horizontally to see the various reservation bars on each resource over time. This is sort of like a Gantt chart with multiple non-overlapping reservations (bars) on each row. "

I would also like to see the option of displaying the reservations (bars) in an overlapping manner as well. This would be a key requirement/option for our use of this feature.

Thank you all for a great looking control. We have been very impressed (as usual) with RadScheduler.

    Sincerely,
    Paige Cook

re schedule import/export I was thinking more in terms of the iCalendar format.  hopefully it does this already?

iCalendar is based on the older vCalendar format and implimented by a number of different vendors.  The implimentation is very simple.  That way a much larger customer base can use it regardless of whether they have an exchange server.

    Hello Paige,

We agree that the "Time line" view (or GANTT chart) is an important feature for RadScheduler and it has been requested a lot. Currently, we are refactoring our rendering code to allow custom views to be created relatively easy. When this is done we will implement the "Time line" and "Group by resource" views.
Overlapping reservation bars in "Time line" view will be possible. They will look much like the overlapping all-day appointments look in "Week view" now.

Regarding the import and export of appointments, RadScheduler currently supports exporting to the iCalendar format. We will address the importing after the first release. We have laid out some of the foundations, by implementing parsing of one of the most tricky parts of the iCalendar format (the RRULE) as part of our recurrence engine. It is very complex file format to process, for example one of the implementations for parsing and processing such files consists of 70+ classes and more than 10 000 lines of code.

Communication with Exchange 2007 will also be considered, as it seems to be much easier and will be often used.

    Tsvetomir ,

The question is in regards to the following scenario.
Let say I have a website X that will be used by a company Y to lookfor events.Currently this company have all the email services provided by google. All the employees use google calendar to add, update, get and delete events.

The Company wants wo support the same functionality without needing going to google calender events page.Probably some forms will do it, but your radscheduler control will be for sure the most usable control currently in the market for this task.

Altough in the future radscheduler will be able to import and export to the icalendar format. Our project will require to dycamically bind to a xml with gdata protocol. My question is if the control will support the protocol used by google Calendar to interchage data.
    For example this calendar

More details about the google calendar can be found at:

I want to suggest feature to the control,

my webusers use double calander, the hebrew one and the general one, for most of them the hebrew one is importent, i want to suggest that the web developer will be able to add events in the main date row, so i, for exmple, will be able to add the hebrew date. arab speaking developer the arab dates and so on.
"simple" calander users will be able to add thing like national days, and so on- in the date line. so it will look like "FRI 13/6/2007- 15 in kisleiv (hebrew date)" or ""FRI 13/6/2007- the of telerig (as a bulgarian national day)" and so on.

    Thanks.

    Hi Dennis,

RadScheduler does not support appointments without specified time. However, it supports all-day events that span from midnight of the one day to midnight of the next and are displayed in a separate area.

    Hello,
Thank you for developing a great product.  Although it is in development, I found the ui phenomenal.  It wasn't until I started programming with it that I found a current limitation.

Here are some suggestions based on what I found:
It would be nice in your release edition, if it could support more flexible data-binding.  I would have like to have the text of the event in the calendar associated with a title and the tooltip associated with a description for that event.  Another thing that would have been nice is for the 'on-click' event to trigger a RadWindow with the ID of the event passed... (perhaps this is possible, but I haven't found how).

One thing I also noticed is a flickering in which the contents of the scheduler dissapear.  They reappear only after hovering over the day-portion of the component.

From some of the other postings on here, it looks like you've already answered most of what I've suggested.

    Great work.

    Hi Shawn,

We already have implemented custom tooltip support in our development builds. Appointment templates will come soon and they will add a great deal of flexibility. Displaying a RadWindow is technically possible now, but will be much easier with templates.

Can you tell me more about the flickering problem? I cannot reproduce it so far.

    Hello,
here is a link to the current file that has shown the flickering issue:

    http://mw.dwwhosting.com/calendar.aspx

This is a test site, to see how controls will fit in layouts..

If I strip the page to only the radscheduler, it will work fine... but in this page, it seems to flicker when hovering over view-menus on the radscheduler component.  There are an asp:scriptmanager and radajaxmanager and radscheduler on the page, along with common html.

Hope this helps in determining the possible issue/resolution.
Please let me know if you need anything further.

    Many thanks.

Thank you for the feedback. This is a bug in IE and can be fixed with the following CSS:

    .RadScheduler{zoom:1}

    Hello Paulo,

This error mainly means that you do not have the necessary http handlers registered in your application's web.config file. You can get a "clean" web.config by creating "ASP.NET AJAX enabled website" directly from VS.

It is stated that RadScheduler supports exporting into the iCal format, if so how would you do that now? I don't see any method call that would allow for that.

    Thanks!

I am really looking forward to the release of the scheduler!  Will we be able to drag and drop between the scheduler and other controls?  For us it would be handy to be able to drag items from a list on to the date and time and then adjust the length from there.

Also will there be a WinForms version of the control as well?

First off, love the control and where it's heading - it's exactly what I've been looking for for a project.

Regarding the ToolTip integration, a tooltip is being shown for links outside of the scheduler. This isn't just me, as the online demo also shows this (for i.e., go over the Telerik log at the top left of the page). This is a problem because I'm using the tooltip to bring up a user control based on the id for an event in the scheduler. The link outside is causing problems with this. As this is a futures build, without digging in further, is it supported to assign target IDs with scheduler as it is for the grid?

UPDATE: Looks like I jumped the gun for posting this (I'm very new to Telerik controls). Yes, I need to specify the TargetControlID, and I am assuming that just like the grid, there's an item databound where I'll add each event to the ToolTipTargetControl collection.

I am so happy to see that you guys are offering the RadScheduler control.

It is a joy to work with your company and your controls.  Your support is outstanding, your examples and website are amazing.  I have been developing web apps for about 10 years now and i have never worked with a company like yours.

I have question about the scheduler control and support going forward.  I wrote something similiar but i added drag and drap support when creating a new schedule event (on day, week, and month views).  For ie:  I could drag from 1 - 4PM, mouse up, then the edit layer would come up and let me type a name for the event (like google calendar), will this new control have this type of support?

Are you still planning on the September release?  We have a license for all of your asp.net controls and pay for premium support every year, will i be able to download this control with our current license?

Is there a "Workweek" view planned (Mo-Fr)? That is a common view which is available in other vendor's controls.

    Thanks

    Hello Anthony,

We have not considered drag and drop support between RadScheduler and other controls or between different instances. Such advanced features will probably have to wait at least until the second or third official release.

Ted, you are right - the same approach should be used, except that the event is called Appointment_Created. We will illustrate it in an example that will be included in the preview refresh, due in two weeks.

Damian, we have not yet implemented such a "drag-to-insert" feature, but we are considering it for the next versions of RadScheduler. It will most probably be ready for the second major release in Q3 2007 in mid-December. There will also be a September release of RadScheduler as planned. From this release on it will be included in the official Prometheus suite and it will be distributed and supported under the same terms.

As a customer, you are already entitled to a full license of the Prometheus suite (the Futures/Preview build is already available in your client.net account).

Stefan, workweek view is planned for the September release.

Do you have a more clear date for the next preview release (not i.e. Q2 beta release, just the next preview one that includes the new command events etc.)? I'm on hold on a project until the new command events are released. If the date is still unclear or delayed, I'm going to need to do my own implementation of paging etc. which I would like to avoid doing if at all possible.

    Much thanks!

All of the other examples run fine except for the scheduler running in VS 2005 or by using the "RadControls 'Prometheus' for ASPNET Live Examples" icon.  I just wanted to let you know that I had an issue as an FYI.  I can use the demo on the telerik.com site and get the code from the examples just fine.

Chris, I still cannot reproduce the problem.  I am building the examples on a clean machine and they run fine. The error suggests that you are possibly running the RadScheduler examples with the regular build of Prometheus.

the dll you are looking for is not in the radcontrols q1 directory, you have to install Prometheus first and then you'll find it under the Telerik\RadControls 'Prometheus' for ASPNET\bin directory.

The bits will be available for download later today, look for the official announcement here.

Sorry for the delay, the new features and the major changes required additional time for debugging and testing.

Bill, I am not sure what might be causing the problem with the dll files. Please, download the preview refresh when it is available and try again.

Joerg, I am sorry, but currently there are no plans to release a WinForms version of RadScheduler in the near future.
