Test Studio’s R2 Release: Simplifying the Complex

Testing and software development are complex enough without your tools getting in the way. I’m particularly excited at how Test Studio’s R2 release kept a number of critical pieces of functionality crisp, clean, and simple while giving you great power to focus on essential portions of your quality program. Performance Testing: Focusing on Critical Information Perhaps the centerpiece of our R2 release is our new Performance Testing feature. You can now easily use any automated functional test to gather performance metrics on that specific slice of your application. You don’t need to change the test in any way, and you ...

Using Test Oracles to Ensure Your Tests’ True Validity

Raise your hand if something similar to this has ever happened to you: You write a functional test that uses your system’s UI to create a user. You automate navigating to the proper screen, you get all the right values filled in, the Submit button gets clicked, and you do a check for the “User created!” message. You run the test a couple times to make sure everything’s working smoothly. Things look good, so you check it in to source control, where it gets wrapped in to your regular automation runs. Shortly after a new bug gets filed stating newly ...

Video of my Selenium Talk from Rocky Mountain Ruby Posted

Back in late August/early September I spoke at the Rocky Mountain Ruby conference in Boulder, Colorado. My talk was about lessons learned dealing with large functional test suites over my career. For example, at a previous job I ran a team that got up to 9,000 Selenium tests scattered across roughly 850 test fixtures. I’ve had similar experiences working on other projects too. The talk was videotaped and is now up on the Confreaks video hosting site: Surviving Growing from Zero to 15,000 Selenium Tests. Yes, the talk’s title is wrong. I goofed when submitting it. The fundamentals I ...

StarWest Follow Up and Slide Deck

I’m at the John Wayne airport waiting on my flight back home from the StarWest conference. This was the first conference I’ve been at as a vendor – I’ve always been a visitor at the front of the booth, never behind it. I had to make some interesting mental changes, but it was a great experience once I got in the groove. Thursday morning I did a session called “Automation Isn’t Just Shiny Toys” where I discussed how to avoid some of the common pitfalls around automation: long running tests, brittle tests, tests which consume far too much time for ...
