Not answered Scrum for Team System v3

  • Hello,

We are using SfTS v3 on TFS 2010 and would like to use the TFS Work Item Manager. However, I would say that even if WIM can connect to a Team Project based on SfTS it is not usable in TaskBoard mode. For example, not all queries are shown in the Work Item Queries pane.

Do you have a plan to fully support this template? Regards,

    David
  • Hello David,

The queries that are missing are the new types of queries introduced with TFS 2010.  In the next release we plan on adding support for these hierarchical queries and also have a parent/child task board view.

These are the two most requested features of WIM and we hope to deliver them shortly after the release of TeamPulse which is currently scheduled for November 17th.

  • We are also using the same TFS template, and I'm having trouble finding out how to get WIM to work with it. It seems to me that it assumes the parent/child relationships uses a link type of "Parent"? At least I'm getting no child items if I group the task board on Parent Work Item. Here, we link Sprint Backlog Tasks to Product Backlog Items with a link type of "Implements", as according to the process guidance.
  • Hello David,

There is currenlty no option in the UI to choose the type of link to use for the parent/child task board view.  We had a pretty tight schedule in our latest round of development and unfortunately this feature didn't make the cut.  However, what you can do is edit the task board settings manually to change the type of link used.  Here are the steps:

    1. Open the task board settings file in a text editor ({My Documents}\Work Item Manager 2010\{Server}\{Collection}\{Project}\TaskBoardSettings.xml).
    2. Find the LinkTypeName element and change System.LinkTypes.Hierarchy-Forward to Scrum.ImplementedBy-Forward.
    3. Save the text file.

If you are sharing your task board settings across your team, you will also need to make sure that this manual change get saved to the TFS server.  This can be done by simply opening the Task Board Settings screen in WIM, changing something, and clicking OK.

If you're not sure if you're using shared settings, go to Application Button > Options and check if the Use Server Setttings checkbox beside your project is checked.

  • Joel,

I tried your workaround to edit the task board settings manually. What I find is that no matter what you do in this file, the new settings aren't recognized and the file is immediately overwritten by WIM.

  • Hello David,

Are you using shared settings?  Please see the attached screnshot.

There are only two cases where the task board settings get updated.  One is if you are using shared settings and the latest version of the settings are downloaded from source control, and the other when you edit the settings yourself using the task board settings window in WIM.  Since there is no option in the window for editing the link type used in the task board, that setting is ignored and not updated when saving the settings.
